Clark Redwood and the Stumps

Right off, let me state that, on this page I'm not going to try and be a completist. There are far too many songs from this period, starting in 1980 or so in Santa Cruz, extending through Oakland and down to Los Angeles even and Cardiff by the Sea in the mid 80s. Oh, what the hell, I'll get as many on here as I can.

Craig Ward gets credit for getting the ball rolling but purchasing one of the first Tascam 144 4-track cassette recorders, along with an early Roland drum machine. Then everything snowballed after that.

Oh, one more thing. Some of these songs are rude, abusive, scatological, offensive to taste and irreverent to religion, and have nasty words in them as well, so beware all ye ears who enter here. Also, no apologies made for the quality of recording of some the material. These tapes are more than 25 years old, after all. We're lucky to have them at all.

In the beginning, there was the tape entitled "Clark Redwood and the Stumps." This tape is not long for the world. It is for material such as this that museums and other art intitutions around the world have created archiving programs. My copy has one label on one side that says "Redwood Pahnis Shot Happenin' on the Stump" and nothing on the other side. The tape was apparently recorded in mono. You can hear the other side bleeding through in the quiet parts, and each time I passed it through my machine for this project, it left a layer of orange crud on the tape heads, as the oxide particles pealed off. As a result, one channel had about half the signal as the other. Fortunately, I only had to play it 2 or 3 times. Needless to say the quality is somewhat miserable, but listenable enough to launch us on that fuzzy, swishy walk down memory lane.

Here's Side 1...

Heyo, on to Side 2...

A few months after the release of "Redwood Pahnis Shot Happenin' on the Stump", Clark went on vacation and left his recording gear with me up in Boulder Creek. But did that slow down the hit making machinery? Listen for yourself to the next release, "Like Shaht".

After this, things started to split apart. Craig and Mary moved to Oakland, I accidently moved to Burbank, etc. but the songs kept coming. The third release was "Boiled-down Homebrew w/Fixings"... at least, that what it says on my copy.

After this, I have a few more Stumps oddities, a few recorded in Burbank, a pair at Tom Hoglund's place in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and one piece I found tacked onto the end of my copy of "Redwood Pahnis Shot Happenin' on the Stump". It probably should be on the In One Ear page, because that's certainly from when it dates - the Fucking Slugs with "Vegetarian Barbarian".

I did not try to make a comprehensive list of who played what on which track for this. Too long ago and far away. But I will include here a list of collaborators as near as I can recall. My apologies to anyone I left off, or included, for that matter. Feel free to correct me.
